Washington State, Rodent Issue And Car Damage

Card image cap

Location: Washington State, King County I am currently renting an apartment, fairly big community with 30+ buildings. There are multiple dumpsters in the vicinity for garbage and recycling. However, all of these dumpsters are infested with rats. There are at least a hundred or more rats that get into the dumpsters, trash and run around the areas. The infestation is quite gross and unsettling. It’s the type of infestation you’d see in movies. Herds of rats running and squeaking.

We have assigned parking and my spot is right near the dumpster and bushes/rocks where I assume the rats nest. Just a few day ago, my car suddenly had multiple issues, all the warning lights popping up on the dash. I wasn’t sure of the cause because I keep up to date with my maintenance. We assumed the problem was my spark plugs so those were changed but the problem persisted. I took my car into the dealership to get checked and right away, they saw the damage was caused my something (rats) chewing through my engine wiring and the engine harness. Estimated cost of repairs is $2,500.

We have brought this issue up to management and our neighbors have as well. They are also experiencing car issues caused by the rats. Management’s response is that it’s not their responsibility and they keep up with pest control.

My question is, should they and could they, be held liable for the damages to my vehicle? Please help.
