School Principal Revealed My Child’s Mental Health Struggles

Unbeknownst to me, my child was suicidal and made a suicide attempt at home and texted a classmate about it. The classmate alerted the school. I was called to the school and made aware of the situation. On advice from the school administration, I took my child directly from the school to the ER. The administration seemed intent that my child needed inpatient treatment. My child was released from the ER and a treatment plan is in place (inpatient treatment was discussed, but, given the details of the situation, not done).
Allegedly, before my child was even at the ER, the school principal pulled several of my child’s classmates aside and told them that my child was going to a mental hospital. Many were not aware that my child was struggling mentally. My child returned to school a few days later and has had to deal with bullying and harassment because of the information that was shared by the principal.
This is a very small, private school.
I have not spoken with the principal yet, but do believe that my child’s confidence was breached as I received a text from a concerned parent shortly after we arrived at the ER. This parent had no way of knowing that anything was amiss, especially that quickly.
If the principal did actually share my child’s mental health struggles with their classmates, was a HIPAA or some other law violated?
