Roommate Has Police Coming To The House Looking For Him

So our roommate has been getting papers served to him for several months. He’s being sued for owing money to someone, a good amount from what I understand. He also did not show up for court.
The cops came when he was out of town, asked if he was home, and when I said he wasn’t here they asked to take a look around the house. I told them no, because we smoke a lot of weed and don’t live in a legal state. I do believe the cops smelled it when I opened the door though. Because when I told them they couldn’t come inside one cop said “we aren’t here for marijuana or anything else”. But I didn’t know if he was lying.
My main question is, is this something the police can get a warrant for? They said they would come back until they arrested him or he turned himself in. So it didn’t sound like they were getting a warrant, but I don’t suppose they’d straight up tell me if they were.
Is there anything I should do in the meantime? I’m working on moving all weed and paraphernalia out of the house now. I’m also nervous because our roommate does harder drugs and I truly don’t know what is kept in his room.
Any advice is appreciated!
EDIT:
A couple of users have mentioned maybe it could’ve been bail bondsmen or bounty hunters. I’m starting to think this might be what those people were. They had uniforms that looked legit but different from the uniforms that the cops wear in my city. They also were not driving a police car but it did appear to have lights on top.
We did have someone show up a while back trying to serve our roommate papers dressed as a plumber, so I know he is actively avoiding these people.
They also never said they were cops or what department they were with or showed me any badges or anything. Next time they come back I guess I should ask for identification. I feel stupid for not doing that in the first place.
