Pending Buyer Got The Power Shut Off For My House

Card image cap

So I'm selling my house.

The buyer was supposed to close on April 12th. That got extended until April 22nd.

Today (April 20th), I wake up to no power. I call the power company and I get an automated message that my area is having an outage. Okay, no problem.

I wait a few hours and call back, the automated message said all power is restored. Welp, mine wasn't. So I got through to an agent. Here's what she told me.

  • on April 12th there was a request to shut off the power and transfer to the new owner

  • they can't turn the power back on until they get someone to come out, and they don't have an eta.

I asked her how it was possible that someone who doesn't own my house is allowed to shut off my power? They won't even own the house until April 22nd. And even then we have a signed rent back agreement until the 28th.

I could see the power company allowing the transfer to a new owner, but the power was shut off without alerting me. So now we don't have power, and I have no idea when it's going to be turned back on.

Do I have any legal recourse here?
