No Hot Water.

Card image cap

location:Pennsylvania I’m reaching out from Pennsylvania regarding an issue with my rental home. My wife and I noticed on Friday, October 31st that we had no hot water. After checking the water heater (a newer self-igniting model), I saw that the pilot light was out and could not be relit. I notified our landlord around 11:00 AM, and he arrived within an hour. He took photos and said he would send them to the plumber. At that time, he mentioned the plumber likely wouldn’t be able to come until Saturday.

By Saturday morning, we still hadn’t received any updates, so we sent a message to the landlord around 11:15 AM. The message was read shortly after but went unanswered for several hours. Later that evening, we received a voicemail stating there had been miscommunication between the plumbers and that parts for the unit may be difficult to find. However, no plumber has actually visited the property to inspect the unit. As of Sunday, we still have no hot water and no clear timeline for repair. We understand landlords must be given reasonable time to address maintenance issues, and we’ve continued paying rent without issue. However, we’re concerned about the lack of communication and transparency regarding the repair. We’d like to know what our options are legally. For instance, are we permitted to stay in a hotel and request reimbursement from the landlord until the issue is resolved? I also have guardianship of my nephew, who frequently stays with us, but we’ve had to make alternate arrangements due to the lack of hot water. Thank you for your time and any guidance you can provide. Location: Pennsylvania
