My Mom Died And Her “ex Boyfriend” Isn’t Letting Me Collect Her Belongings

My mom passed away in September last year in Cleveland Ohio. My brother and I, who live in Northern Virginia, went to his house to collect some of her belongings with the understanding that we’ll come back at a later date to collect the rest. My brother, sister, and I have tried to contact him to arrange a date which we’ll be able to do this.
Originally, he was in communication shortly after her death saying that he would mail some certain items to us. That was back in January. He’s unfriended all of us on Facebook and isn’t responding to any of our messages or texts. There are some things in his house still that we really want but weren’t able to find when we collected previously, such as hard drives with family photos and videos, medical records, copies social security cards, birth certificates; as well as a very rare and valuable firearm, family heirlooms, and other such items.
Is there a legal way we can get these items from him? She had no will, they were never married, never in any legal domestic partnership. She lived there purely out of necessity, following their failed relationship. I am very worried that he will try to sell certain items. The only reason we haven’t driven up or flown there is the harrowing reality that we won’t be able to do anything.
