Management Group From Old Apartment Is Requesting $1450 Nearly 6months After Moving Out.

Girlfriend and I moved out of our old apartments in November of 2023. We contacted them multiple times about our security deposit. They never did a walkthrough with us either. We live in Central NY and I believe legally they have 2 weeks to get a security deposit back to us.

In Feb/March I called and was told that there was an ongoing issue with all secutiy deposits and they were backed up sending them out but was lead to believe they would get to us eventually.

In April I hadn't heard anything back and talked to someone higher up. They said they were holding our security deposit because we had a missing months rent. We always paid our rent and never ran into issues with that. We were never told about missing months rent as we paid subsequent months rent or as we returned the keys to our apartment.

I do know in August we had an issue with the new management group not cashing checks. I visited the office multiple times as Septembers rent as coming up. I was told over and over that they were behind on cashing rent checks but we had no outstanding bills due and we were fine. We paid Sept/Oct/Novembers rent without any issues.

The rent was $1,100. Looking through our bank statments it looks like they never cashed it, and never told us about it until we reached out about our security deposit. They are now requesting $1,458. Not sure how they got that number.

This is their email to us,

Thank you for being a valued resident of [redacted] We were happy to have you and sad to see you go. Please be aware that you have a current account balance of $1,458.00 that is due upon receipt of this email. Conveniently, your move-out statement is online from [redacted] for you to view!

These charges have been assessed based on a thorough walk-through inspection of your apartment post move-out, only the charges you are responsible for are included in your move-out statement. If you are unable to pay the entire balance at this time, we will accept payments during this period.

You can easily set up a payment arrangement in minutes when you click on the "Pay Balance" button and use the ID provided below.

We appreciate you.

Thank you.

Our walk-through should have been fine. We left our apartment clean and without major damage. Security deposit was around $900. Are they really able to force us to pay rent from 9months ago due to their mismanagement? I dont want this to follow me and ruin my credit/chance to move into better apartments.

Thanks!
