My Lease Ended And My Landlord Is Trying To Charge Me A Maintenance/repair Fee For The Removal Of Smoke Detectors

I live in Massachusetts. Like I said my lease just ended and my landlord is trying to charge me a maintenance/repair fee of around $400 for the removal of smoke detectors. He said that I removed them and maintenance had to go into the apartment and reinstall new ones.
I never tampered or messed with them. I also have proof that before I left the apartment they were still there and had not been touched. He didn't provide a date of when this occurred, so I am assuming it was once I gave them back the keys. I also had cameras in the apartment whenever I wasn't home so I know maintenance did not go into the apartment without my knowledge.
I've asked them to provide me with the following: the service ticket, the itemized bill for this charge, and the date on which this Maintenance/Repair was performed. But I haven't gotten any information yet.
Is this legal? He's charging me for something that I didn't do. Can he do this without any proof of me doing it? In the lease, it says that tampering with the detectors, results in me getting evicted. So, it seems like this "repair" was recent. I have images of the location that prove the equipment was in perfect condition until it was under my responsibility.
The only thing that I can think of is him trying to scam me with this false accusation. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
