My Girlfriend's Roommates Told Her Today That They're Kicking Her And Her Daughter Out Effective Immediately, Changing The Locks, And Putting Their Stuff On The Curb. Can They Do This?

My partner (30) and her daughter (5) moved in with her roommates (30, 29) almost a year ago. About 6 weeks ago, the 4 of them (my partner, her daughter, and their two roommates) moved to a different unit in the same building. So it's definitely been over 30 days that she's lived in this current unit, in addition to the ~8 months in the other unit. She's never caused any issues or been late on rent. She doesn't pay the landlord directly, instead usually transfers money to one or her roommates. But there is plenty of proof in texts and money transfers that she has paid. Her name isn't on a lease, because they didn't sign a lease for the new place*. Her roommates signed a lease for the unit they used to live in when they moved in, but that lease ended long ago and they have been effectively month-to-month since then. Is it legal for them to kick her out? Is it legal for them to throw out her stuff? She isn't trying to stay living there, she's mostly worried about her stuff getting thrown out before we have a chance to get it, because they threatened to do it tomorrow. If she's legally allowed to be there, her stuff is too, right? If they remove stuff from her room while she is legally allowed to be there, would that constitute theft? We live in Chicago, IL by the way. Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to read this. It may be a stupid question and I'm fairly confident I know the answer, but I want to be sure and be able to reassure her.
