Is It Legal For A Company To Fire An Employee For Reporting Their Place Of Work To The Health Department?

I’ve recently started a new job (been there about 2 months) and there are several health code violations, the most major one being that ready-to-eat food is stored completely uncovered and exposed to multiple contaminants. I’ve been requesting we get a cover for it to prevent contaminating the food, but I’ve been led back and forth between, “we ordered a cover, it’ll be here soon”, or “we’re actually not getting one” for the past two months despite my consistent attempts to fix the issue. In fact, today I was told by my manager that I was essentially bothering him incessantly with the constant talk of the cover and heavily implied that he wanted me to stop asking him about it. In response I accidentally let slip that I had been considering calling the health department if nothing else was done, and my manager responded that “that’s a terrible idea, you’d get fired.” Is it actually legal for a place to fire me for reporting it to the health department for a legitimate concern? I haven’t actually done it, and I hope not to have to, but I just wanted to ask because I kind of fear my manager will take word of what I said to the head honcho, and I want to be prepared if they do come at me for even thinking about it (which I absolutely would not put it past them to do.) Any advice?
