My Employer Is Asking Me To Clock Out Then Clock Back In For A Double Shift

I work in California, usually an 8 hour shift but sometimes I do a double of 16 hours. My boss told me to clock out and clock back in one minute later, but one of my co-workers told me not to do that. Am I getting screwed over by doing what they’re asking of me?
I work full time, last pay period I worked 89.29 hours and I pulled two overnight shifts.
I just want to make sure what they’re asking me to do is legal, and if I should stop doing it.
And for context if this is poorly written I am about to clock out of a 16 hour shift rn.
Thank you
