My Bank Instructed Me To Forge A Signature

I bank with “One Financial”. I received a check from a previous employer, I attempted to deposit the check through their app. It was denied because my signature “wasn’t legible”… I called their customer service, they instructed me to put another signature. So I did. Still got denied. I called them again, they instructed me to copy the signature that is on the front of the check to the back. I way very skeptical of this because as far as I’m aware, that’s illegal. They insisted that I do it anyway. So I did, tried to deposit the check again, still denied.
My check is no longer valid and I don’t have any means to get another. Can I be held liable for the forged signature? And do I have a case for a lawsuit against “One Financial”?
Thanks for any replies.
