My 72-year-old Mother Hasn’t Been Able To Renew Her Id For Almost 20 Years Due To A Clerical Error At The Dmv Or The Social Security Office. How Do We Fix This?

EDIT: the “something” was a line that said “refer to Social Security Administration” at the DMV and “refer to DMV” at the SSA office. The line was in the bottom right hand corner of their screen and didn’t provide any additional information. At both locations it prevented them from being able to move forward on their system.

Apologies if this is not allowed due to it not being a simple question.

Back in 2018 we tried again aggressively to renew my mom’s ID. I’m trying to format this but it may not work.

  • We went to the DMV and they said that social security had to release something on their end for them to issue the ID.
  • As suggested, we went to the social security office and they said the DMV had to release something on their end.
  • So we went back to the DMV and waited for hours until a man told us we had to go back to the social security office again for the same reason - he showed us the screen which said that sure enough the social security office had to do something on their end.
  • We went back to the social security office and got a manager involved. That lady got mad and started yelling at my mom that it wasn’t their fault. My mom is hearing impaired and I feel the manager really mishandled the situation. After the manager stormed off the other worker showed the screen, which also showed a similar message to the one at the DMV on their screen.

If both systems show the same message to go to the other department, what do we do? Is there anything that can be done or will she be forever without an ID?

Due to my mom having had endometrial cancer, Covid and ongoing declining health due to an inner ear disease she hasn’t been physically up to going back to try to get this issue resolved. And to be honest I don’t know if that’s the right course of action to go in person again.

Back info: - She had a legal name change done but shortly before my father died, we found out he never mailed the paperwork to finalize her name change back in the early 80s. So some of the paperwork was sent in, but some wasn’t. - She has been able to receive social security and has been able to go see a doctor but it’s getting more challenging as laws change in our state.
