Maintenance Guy Gave Us Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Woke up this morning to a flooded basement and our maintenance guy showed up and looked at it. He decided to go to Home Depot to get a gas powered pump to get it out. My husband questioned the safety of it but was assured if we opened windows and doors it would be safe. Turned out it was absolutely not safe. About 20 minutes into pumping our carbon monoxide detector went off and I asked him to shut the pump off. He did for a few minutes because I was concerned, but again assured us that it was safe and to just take the detector outside but we were safe because the windows were open. My husband was down in the basement with him and felt sick and dizzy all afternoon. About 2 hours after the maintenance guy left I took the detector just inside my front door and it went off immediately. At this time I made the decision to call the non emergency fire department and they came and said that there were extremely dangerous levels in the house. They were able to use a strong fan to get it back to a safe level. They also insisted that we both go to the ER to get checked out. We both have elevated levels of carbon monoxide in our bloodstreams. Who is liable for our hospital bills? Are we owed compensation? How do I proceed here?
