Lawyer Keeping 40% Of Relocation Fee

Card image cap

Hi everyone,

Is a lawyer entitled to keep 40% of someone's relocation fee? Isn't the relocation fee what's legally owed to the person for moving? The landlord is claiming they negotiated it as part of the settlement, but in my eyes, the fee wasn't negotiated. The relocation fee was always a given - there's no way around it. If you want to evict someone, you need to pay the relocation fee. Any extras is what the lawyer negotiated (such as two months free rent).

This is for an eviction in California. The landlord is evicting us in order to do construction and raise the rent three-fold.

Is it legal for the lawyer to keep 40% of the relocation fee?

Thank you!
