Are Stores Required To Keep Counterfeit Bills?

I’m not planning on taking any legal action and no legal action has been taken on me either but I am very curious about the law of the situation that just happened to me.

I went to my bank’s ATM to withdraw some cash and then went to a Shell gas station. I went inside to buy a water and pay for gas. I handed the cashier two $20’s and she said they don’t take big bills like that ($20 is a big bill?) I asked if I could pay for the water and use the change to pay for gas and she said fine. She used a marker to check if the two bills were counterfeit and one of them was “fake” according to her. I apologized and said that I had just withdrawn the cash from my bank and handed another $20 bill which she checked and it was legit. She put the “counterfeit” $20 on the back counter and I was confused and asked if I could have that back to check with my bank. She refused and said it was company policy to keep all counterfeit bills that were used at the gas station. I asked why would they keep the fake bill if I’ve already paid for everything with legit bills. She wouldn’t explain and just said it was company policy and the cameras saw me give them a counterfeit bill. Another customer agreed with me that she needs to give the bill back to me so I can prove to my bank that I got a fake bill and if the bill didn’t turn out to be fake then she’d be stealing from me. The cashier called her manager or whatever and threw the bill back at me, making it seem like I’m the asshole or something.

I tried looking up if it was legal for them to keep counterfeit bills and couldn’t find anything. If the cashier continued to refuse to give back my $20 bill I had considered calling the police. So what’s the law in this situation?

EDIT; Forgot to mention that the so-called counterfeit $20 was from 2006 so maybe that’s why the marker marked it as fake? But not sure if that has to do with anything. Also not sure if it’s possible for banks to dispense counterfeit bills at their ATM’s too.
