Interim Portugal Debt Collectors

Hi all,

Last September, my friends and I embarked on a road trip from San Francisco to Denver. We rented two RVs from a company called Indie Campers. Around three days into the trip, we encountered an accident involving a low-hanging roof. We had opted for the most comprehensive insurance coverage for peace of mind during the trip, which included a provision for a replacement vehicle in such scenarios. However, we were informed that no replacement vehicle was available, so for the remaining two weeks, we had to make do with the DIY'd roof.

Upon returning the vehicle, we were informed that the roof and side mirrors were not covered by the insurance. This information had not been communicated to us at any point during the trip or prior to renting the vehicles. Had we known, we would have sought third-party insurance elsewhere. Additionally, we had specifically asked representatives during the trip and were assured that we were fully covered.

Despite this, they attempted to charge approximately $12,000 to my friend's credit card, which we had fortunately canceled as a precaution. We requested documentation and clarification on why we were not covered and who provided their insurance. However, they provided minimal information and only sent us a vague apology email, promising to investigate further.

After six months of silence, my friend received an email from 'Interim Portugal,' threatening legal action and demanding payment of €12,000. Understandably, my friend is becoming anxious as the situation escalates and the threats intensify.

Has anyone else dealt with these people? It's unclear why we should be held responsible for a debt to a third-party company when we haven't even established our liability. I've read in other posts that this company acquires debts for minimal cost and lacks a legitimate basis for their claims. We are all based in the UK.

Any advice or insights on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
