Do I Really Have To Pay For My Old Apartment Complexes Renovation Work?

My partner (22 M) and I (20 F) moved out of an apartment complex last month (Indiana, US) because the management was incredibly poor and inconsistent. Now that we have left, they have sent a final bill that is over $800 over what they told us we would be expected to pay when we left. They have written off things vaguely in our bill such as "damages" and "damage waiver protection" but when I reach out asking about what is going on, they do not provide accurate information. They claim there was carpet damage that required replacement but there was no carpet damage, we even steam cleaned the carpets before we left. Since we moved in, every time someone has moved out they have replaced the carpet in the unit and they are doing various renovation work in the units. Is it legal for them to bill us for renovation work and write it off as damages? My partner and I are living paycheck to paycheck, I work seven days a week at two different jobs and he works 12 hour days regularly. I know if we ignore this it will negatively impact our credit and rent history, but we cannot afford to pay it. Any advice is greatly appreciated, I am panicking over here.
