I Was Paid A Lump Sum Over $40k I Wasn’t Owed

About 3 months ago the department of defense (my former employer) direct deposited approximately $44k into my account. This money was payment for an oversees deployment in 2020 that ended up getting cancelled due to COVID. I have made good faith efforts to try and return the money but no one seems to care. I am at a point now where I have set the money aside in a secure account where it will not be accidentally touched and I am waiting on someone to reach out to me to collect it.

I guess my question is this: is there any legal claim I have to this money or the interest I accrue on it? At this point it’s frustrating that I can’t get anyone to take this seriously. I do not want to get into any legal trouble by just having this money sit there but no one seems to have noticed that it is gone and it feels like no one is coming for it. It would obviously be life changing money for my family if used responsibly, but I in no way want to steal anything from anyone.
