How Can I Get Money Back From My Ex?

His Location: Montana

Back in August, before he was my ex, I lent my boyfriend $1000 to hire a lawyer to help with a DUI he had just received. I made it clear that it was a loan and not a donation. He said he would pay me back when he could.

Fast forward to today...he has made one payment (a month ago) of $200, which I really did appreciate and I told him that. However, every conversation I've ever tried to have with him regarding repayment since then, has been ignored.

I finally got really serious with him and said I wished I would had him sign a contract. He arrogantly said, "well I didn't sign a contract and I'm never going to so you will get your money when I can."

I honestly assumed that in a month at the most, I'd have my money paid back. Yet, here we are almost 3 months later and I've only received $200.

Is there anything I can do? We are in different states so it's tricky. Also, since he has this pending DUI situation going on (which I believe his lawyer is still fighting), would me starting a small claims case affect that? I don't want to make things worse for him, but I really need to make sure I get my money back.
