Facebook Marketplace Seller Threw Timber Block At My Car Because I Didn't Buy His Bike.

Went to the house of a seller I contacted through Facebook marketplace to buy his bike. Met the guy, tried the bike, wasn't in as good condition as the photos and had some other options so politely thanked him for his time and went to leave. No sooner than had I said I wasn't interested, the guy's demeanour immediately changed. He grabbed the bike and slammed it against the fence behind him. I could tell he was annoyed so I thanked him for his time, even apologised for the inconvenience, only to hear him say as I walked away "I hate fucking time waters". Sorry dude - not everyone's gonna buy your shit straight away. Chill out. Walked back to my car which was parked on the road, turned around the dead-end street and pulled away. Some motion caught my eye from the guys backyard fence as I drove past, and I watched the guy throw a block of timber (about the size of a box you'd buy a light bulb in) at my car as I drove past. The wood hit my front wheel coger panel, made a dent and marked it with the white paint that was on the wood. I stopped the car up the road, walked back and grabbed the wood and put it in my car then called the police. Guy had returned inside his home. Police asked If i was in danger, and since i technically wasn't, told me to hang up and call Policelink. Who in turn told me to hang up and submit a crime report. Two months on and multiple follow-up calls, I finally get a return call from the IO today (who had been on extended paternity leave the entire time according to Station admin) saying "we spoke to the guy, he denied it, so nothing we can do due to lack of evidence". Is there really nothing I can do here? I've got a quote of $550 for the damage which I suppose now is just an out of pocket expense or a few hundred dollars off the value of the car if I sell it. Even though I watched this absolute degenerate physically throw the timber at my car. Hard not to feel that this is super incompetent of the police in that they just can't do anything. One guy from the cop shop I spoke to on the phone while trying to chase up the IO was like "oh yeah I know the guy, real piece of work, and exactly the type of person to do something like that. This should be a clear cut and easy case, and I'm very sorry it's taken this long and not been sorted already. I'll have a chat with my supervisor, but If need be, I'll go down there myself today and talk to him myself". That was a week ago... then today I get "sorry bud, no dice" #ftp man. Useless. I've done some research and it looks like dropping or throwing objects at a moving vehicle can land you up to two years. Please let me know if there's literally any legal recourse that I'd have access to. Thanks friends.
