Dollar General

Card image cap

I come from a small town (>1000 residents) in rural NYS. Currently there is a dollar general about 2 miles north and 8 miles south of our Main Street. The town recently approved for an old building to be demolished and another dollar general to be built in its place. I support whatever tax dollars and business opportunities that want to be here, but my neighbors and I wish for it to be on the sidewalk. Our down town district consists of mostly 100+ year old buildings but it hasn’t been redeveloped due to lack of sewer (state just allocated money for a study we’re excited). We don’t mind a parking lot, we just don’t want our town to turn into a non walkable row of parking lots. especially when we are on a main state road and there is an elementary school yard behind it. If we’re going to develop, we may as well do it right from the start and set example for the next new business. Should I approach the zoning officer directly with this concern, do we have the right to petition, and would it even make a difference?
