Corporal Punishment In Preschool

My daughter attends a private preschool. They use Montessori principles, including discipline that involves teaching instead of punishment. Physical punishment is of course prohibited and in fact is illegal in our state.
This week my daughter (5) told me when the headmistress is very angry, she has students turn to face the wall and hits them on their butt. I tried to stay calm to get all the facts. My daughter has never seen punishment like this modeled and would have no frame of reference for it so I am inclined to believe her, but it is a very serious accusation nonetheless.
This is a for-profit preschool and the headmistress is also the proprietor. Do I have any legal recourse? My only evidence is her recollection, and she says this happened a year ago. She described the incident clearly. I asked if she had ever seen this woman hit anyone else, and she remembered a classmate’s brother also being hit.
I have withdrawn her from the school, but I did not tell them why. I feel too angry to discuss it calmly, and I can’t imagine they will be truthful. I feel lost, and I’m worried there could be legal repercussions for me, as well, if I tell any other parents what happened.
Your advice is very appreciated, thank you in advance.
