Contract Cut Short, And Off-boarded From Work 1 Week From Going On Maternity Leave

My wife works under contract as a Project Manager for a major tech company. When she was 3 months pregnant, she let her management know of her upcoming status of FMLA. We are in Colorado and are supposed to get 12 weeks for maternity leave. Instead of her taking leave next week, today the tech company decided to pull out of the contract 7.5 months early, and the contract agency ended employment based on there no longer being a contract position at the supported tech company, no written reason but verbally stating her contract will end with her beginning maternity leave, and to begin off-boarding. My wife had been working toward a 2 year renewal of her contract, which was scheduled for December, a 4.5 month work period after her 12 weeks of leave. She wasn’t laid off for a reorganization or financial constraints directly, and was commended for good work routinely. This feels like a way around legal red tape to save money or cut ties easily with contract workers, but it also feels like this shouldn’t be legal. Is this legal or should we consult more deeply with an attorney?
