Can My Storage Unit Facility Cut My Lock Without Prior Notice For An Audit?

Card image cap

I have been renting out a unit at a storage facility in NJ since Jan 2024. Have had no issues until the other day after I was there for a few hours to bring some stuff and organize.

I left around 3:30pm, and later on that evening around 6 I received an email stating this (I have copied it word for word):

"Hello________,

We need you to put a new lock on your unit.

We have it secure with one of ours but she to an audit, we need you to replace it with a new one.

We need this done by Sat, 4/20/24.

Please give us a call at ________.

Thank you"

This was my response:

"At your convenience can you please respond to this email and provide me with some details regarding the audit, such as:

-it's purpose -the time and date it took place -the overall process and steps performed"

They have not responded to my email and I really don't want to call them because I prefer our correspondence in writing.

I should point out that my payments were not late at the time this happened and they are still not late. So that is not the reason this happened.

I looked in the terms and conditions they sent me and didn't see anything about what would happen during a possible storage unit audit (whatever that is?!) or a reason they would need to cut my lock without notice, besides being late on my payment or in the case of an emergency or something like that.

Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated!
