Can I Say Why A Whistleblower Was Fired?

Helllo! I work for a non-profit. The director and all the staff are new (I and the director started less than 6 months ago, the rest of the staff even more recently than that). After we started, we found a lot of ethical issues in the organization, including tax fraud. My boss, after three months of trying to get some action out of the board, went ahead and canceled a program that was rife with ethical issues. The board fired her for doing so. If someone asks, can I say she was fired for pushing back against unethical behaviors? I am well-aware that I am potentially going to be fired, I am not going to continue to engage in these unethical practices, but would they be able to sue me if I truthfully say that she was fired for calling out their tax fraud?
