Can A Woman Get Alimony If Her Income Came From The Husband's Company?

Hi all. First post. Here's the backstory:
My good friend who also owns the company that I work for is recently separated from his wife and is planning to file for divorce. Without going into too much detail, her gambling and drinking problems are the reason for the divorce. Previously, she drew a salary from his company for handling payroll, but since the separation, that position has gone to someone else. Things have been fairly amicable up until recently, with my friend continuing to make payments on her vehicle (which is in her name) and giving her some spending money to help her out, until she finds a job. An important note is that she hasn't had a full time job in years. She only showed up a few days a week to do payroll. She's shown no motivation to get a job or find stable housing, staying with friends or in my friend's camper, which he's let her use.
Now, on to the main point of the post. Apparently last night, she started messaging him, telling that he's going to have to pay for maintenance if he goes through with the divorce. I told my friend that it's time to get a lawyer, as I'm pretty sure she can argue that she was dependent on him, and since he's initiating the divorce, she's entitled to alimony. He disagrees, and believes that because her income technically came from the company and not him as an individual, that argument is invalid. One other important note: the company is set up as a sole proprietorship in his name.
So could any lawyers or people who have experience with divorce and alimony tell me how this might play out? I'm afraid that if he doesn't get a lawyer involved now, he may end up giving up part of the company or paying ridiculous alimony. Thanks in advance.
