Bit By A Dog, Going Through Rabies Vaccine Program. Options?

first i will say, the first round of rabies vaccinations are extremely painful. That was the worst pain i have ever felt, and i have chronic back pain.

i was walking home yesterday morning when i walked by a home with an unleashed dog in the driveway. The dog latched onto me and started following me down the street. There was a kid that tried to get control of the dog but it was too late and it knicked me on the leg nest to the knee.

i went back trying to find the owner and someone finally appeared. I told him that their dog just bit me, and he responded in the way where you put your hand on your head in an “oh shit” moment. He said that the dog was a pup (a pitbull) I found out his name but had to get home to get to work (first mistake).

i decided to go to urgent care and the when i finally saw the nurse, she was completely uninterested in me, i even had to maneuver my leg for her to see it. They prescribed me some antibiotic cream and sent me on my way.

fast forward some hours, i went to get the cream and the pharmacist started telling me all kinds of things that can happen with rabies. This started freaking me out so i decided to look into getting the rabies vaccine course, which i completed my first round of tonight, within 24 hours of being bitten.

i called the police at the time and they said they cant really do anything except cite for a non-leashed animal.

since i didni’t get the guy’s number (second mistake), i searched public records to find out who owns the place and how i can contact them. The owners have the property through a rental agency, so they gave me that person’s information. I called them and they investigated a bit and said that not only is the tenant there out of town, they dont even own a dog. and their name isn’t what the guy told me (could be lying about all of this).

i am going to call animal control tomorrow but what i want to know is is there any legal action or compensation that i can receive from this? The police seemed very disinterested, and i dont even know if the guy i saw is the one that actually lives there. I would love some advice on what i can do here.

i have been extremely stressed out because i dont know anything about this dog other than the fact that it isn’t a stray, and rabies is extremely rare in the US. But i am going through the treatment regardless just to be on the safe side.
