[new Jersey] Car Salesman - Sold Me A Car With A Deleted Check Engine Code & Caught Him Attempting To Install 'spacers'

So i bought a car from a used car salesman. (This is in New Jersey)
The car had no check engine lights when i purchased it. However, 3 weeks later, Check Engine code P0420 turned on and the issue with the car was basically an expensive repair.
I wrote a bad google review for his business and he called me immediately stating he would like to fix the issue.
I told him i got an estimate from Pepboys. $4000 to repair the issue.
He said he will have his mechanic look into it. When i called his mechanic, and i asked him how would he fix it? He said the car salesman told him to install a 'spacer'.
A spacer is a device that goes into the Catalytic Converter of a vehicle, essentially tricking the sensor from being tripped. He was going to essentially put the car in a worse state.
I bought the car AS-IS and paid with Debit Card (Cash, essentially).
I want my money back but he said he cant do that.
I also have him recorded saying that he installed spacers on other vehicles as well. I dont know if I have any legal basis here.
I tried getting in touch with lawyers but i get ignored.
any advice. or do i just kick the bucket and count my loss?
