Roland and his older brother Claude were crossing the Spanish border on May 1944 and were stopped by the German patrol. The father Nathan Bercovici and the oldest son Claude were the only ones to escape arrest. Roland was deported with his mother Gilberte Bercovici (Ditisheiem) on May 30, 1944.
