Adelaide (Daus )(Archer) Sohl (May 5, 1918 –June 2, 2015)passed away quietly just weeks after her 97th birthday. Addie grew up the only daughter of Anna and Karl Daus in Skokie, Illinois with brothers Alfred and Walter (both deceased). Addie was an avid sports fan her entire life, and died hoping this might be the year the Cubs take the pennant. A season ticket holder to the Chicago Bears for many years, she never lost interest in either team despite their disappointing results over many, many years. She listened to sporting events on the radio up to her last days. In her lifetime, she recalled a time before automobiles when children in Skokie literally did walk a mile in the snow to attend school. She left school at the age of 16 because her parents no longer had the daily dime needed to pay for her education. She went to work at Marsh Instruments in the 1940’s as one of the “Rosie the Riveters” making airplane gauges and instrument panels for fighter planes. She was immensely proud of her work at Marsh and even after the war when “the men returned” she continued as one of the few women in the plant and made a lifetime friend, Margaret Tripicchio. She had two children, Donna Jean (Pennington, New Jersey) and Robert Fay (Central Point, Oregon) who were a source of pride as Donna earned the education she lacked and Robert started a successful business. She lost her first husband, Fay, in 1964 then remarried George Sohl (deceased 2002). They moved to Medford, Oregon after retirement for a simpler life yet she always missed the hustle and bustle of the city. She had an active social life in Medford around her dog, Mikey and friendships like Mary Lou and Walter Stallcup. Addie was an excellent baker whose German chocolate cake, and shaumtorte recipes have been admired for years.
In her last five years, while still fiercely independent, she did rely on the loving care and watchful eye of daughter-in-law Beverly and son, Robert as well as the attentive staff at Northridge Center.
In addition to her son Robert and daughter Donna, Addie is survived by five grandchildren and their spouses: David Dennis and Sarah Pennington of Seattle; Susan (Archer) and Robert Moutard of Redding California; Debbie (Dennis) and Bob Meola of Skillman NJ; Lori (Archer) and Dean Thomas of Redding California; and Doug and Brenda (Wagner) Dennis of Hainesport, New Jersey. Grandma Addie also had nine great grandchildren: Brenton, Taylor, Daniel, Katherine, Patricia, Abigail, Spencer, Aidan and Cory as well as many nieces and nephews.
She will be deeply missed.
