Was Left My Grandma's House And Just Not Sure Where To Begin.

Card image cap

Was left my grandmother's house while I was living in a different state. My grandmother had a will that was written by a lawyer and was notarized. I am declared as her executor and personal representative in the will.

My grandmother was my mother in all aspects but biology, so I'm kind of flying in the wind now with no parent or anything to ask. Just not even sure where to start with all of the post-death adulting that I have to do now. I have been kind of in a fog and grieving the last 2 weeks so I have kind of pushed it to the side.

Is a good place to start contacting the lawyer who wrote the will? Is there a timeframe that I need to complete everything by - I imagine with this kind of thing, they usually give you time to grieve? I'm a bit of a mess and also trying to wrap up final exams in my current state. I am currently living in a different state, but plan to move back home and live in her house/my childhood home. Would it be better to use her lawyer/someone who is currently in a different state than me but is familiar with the laws - or should I find someone here in my state that I could work with that is local? Could most things be done via phone/fax for now?

If anyone even has a good online resource they could recommend that has like a checklist or something of all the things I need to do that would be great too and kind of explains the process that would be great, too.

Thank you!
