Charged For The Electric For 4 Years After He Moved Out... Just Found Out We Have An $11k Debt.

My husband lived in a house in college with some roommates. When he graduated in 2019 and moved away, he did what he thought was transferring it to the next guy who would be in charge of electric for the house. We found out today (5 years later) that he had never actually switched the account to the next person, but instead just switched the phone number and email on the account to the next guy. (Energy company said this happens "all the time apparently". For the next 4 years, we never heard anything and never gave it a thought. We had no idea he was continuing to be charged for his college's house electric for all that time. It wasn't until we saw a debt of 11 thousand dollars on his credit report that we discovered all of this. We have no idea why the guy who must have been getting emails never contacted us and why the guys who moved in thought it was normal that there was no electric bill to pay. After a full year of trying to dispute this bill with that energy company (National Grid) someone finally told us that our dispute would be denied because my husband never officially switch the account over... despite our proof that he was not living there for any of that time. Does anyone think there's anything we can do here? Any thoughts? Unfortunately it sounds like it will now just be a matter of reaching out to the people who lived there after Brian and asking if they would pay us..
