Termination For Having Cancer

My girlfriend started a new job late February of 2024. Unfortunately in early May she was diagnosed with cancer and has had emergency surgery 2 weeks later. She will have chemo treatments beginning in about 2 weeks. Upon notification of this to her employer their very first response was termination. They said it would be best if they just "move on" from her at this point. The Dr. Said she can resume light duty when not in chemo, but that's not even an option anymore. I know this is wrong, but is this legal? She does not know her rights and is too emotionally wrapped up to get answers herself.
