My Sister Accidentally Hit An Elderly Lady With A Shopping Cart

Card image cap

We were exiting a grocery store when my sisters cart hit the cane of an elderly lady. The lady fell, hit her face on the floor and broke her glasses. She had a cut that I think was caused by the glasses. Her daughter was some 7 ft ahead of us and came back screaming, accusing us of hitting her mom with the cart, and told us to get away (my sister was trying to help the lady sit up). I then called management, told them what happened. An ambulance was called and we gave the store our statement. They told us to wait around and we did. The lady was taken to the hospital, the daughter stayed back and tried to talk to us again but started screaming at which point management stopped her.

We met management handle it and stayed close by as we were instructed. The police was not called to the scene.

We said we needed to be somewhere and asked if anything else was needed from us, management told us we could leave.

Could we get into any trouble? The store didn’t ask for any of our info. But the daughter was very aggressive and now we’re afraid she will try to sue us or something.

It was a legitimate accident. We were walking slowly and in the two seconds we looked at each other as we were walking, the lady was there. It also happened right by the door tracks, so we think there is a chance she tripped and we just happened to “help” in a way. We offered to help, we apologized profusely and stayed for about 40 minutes or so.

Thank you.
