Student Accusation
Location: Oregon. I’m posting this for my husband who is has been a teacher in our home district for 10 years and is subbing this year on a leave of absence (not discipline related). He has subbed every school day so far this year at 7 different schools including 3 longer term placements. Yesterday he subbed for ESOL at a new school where he was 1 on 1 with students in a classroom by themselves. The students didn’t know him and weren’t informed there would be a sub. One student was supposed to go over their research report on 3D printers which they did and then they had extra time left so my husband suggested they go look at the 3D printer in the craft room. He had spent about ten minutes with this student total. The student said no no I can’t go with you and ran out of the classroom. He then preceded to tell his teacher that my husband was drunk and tried to take him from the school. An admin came and talked to him and after awhile they came to the realization together that this was unfounded and he felt bad but had to make my husband leave early in an abundance of caution. My husband let them know it was not best practice to have kids be alone with subs and makes them very vulnerable. The admin said not to worry though he would take care of it. Later that afternoon our friend who is a union rep called me and said that the schools union rep had called her saying my husband might need union representation because she heard that he was drunk at school, tried to take this kid off campus and that the police came and arrested him which was an absolutely wild escalation. None of that is true. We have not heard from anyone else. What should we do to protect him? And his reputation which is very good??
