Shutting Off Electricity/squatter Situation

To make a long story short, my brother passed away last week. The apartment lease was in my mom’s name and the electric is in my name. His former roommate allowed multiple people to stay there and there was a shooting in the apartment Monday.

The roommate stayed away from the apartment for like 2 days (dodging the cops) and during that time, the locks were changed. She’s been begging my mom to get them to let her in to get her stuff. My mom called the complex, explained the situation and they agreed to come unlock the door, let the two of them in and then come back and lock up when she was done.

I’m sure everyone can guess where this is going… She refuses to leave. And after waiting hours for the cops to show up, they said she has to be evicted. My mom didn’t know better, I would have thought the complex would.

So now they have to go through the process and evict this lady (and my mom, but she lives with me so it’s just a matter of her credit being messed up). Because we aren’t landlords, can I turn the electric off in my name?
