Seeking Legal Advice: Nda Restrictions On Portfolio Display

Card image cap

Hello Legal Advice subreddit, I am a graphic designer from New Jersey.

When I left college I worked for (and still work for) an artist. They wanted me to create designs for a certain project and made me sign an NDA related to it. Before I signed the NDA my boss said I could include this project on my portfolio and my website. I signed the NDA without reading it which was a mistake but at the time I was fresh out of college with no real-world experience and didn't know better.

A year later I completed the project and helped put it into production. Throughout that year I kept telling my boss how excited I was to put this on my website because it was the best professional graphic design work I have done. I even have my name listed in the project giving me credit for my work. When the project was finally out to the public in a museum I asked my boss how would they like me to show this project in my portfolio and they said I couldn't. They said because I was working under them and it wasn't my original idea I couldn't showcase the design work I had done.

I am so frustrated because they lied to me from the beginning. I was the one who did a majority of the design work for this project. I put so much thought and care and spent so many hours of my life into this. I want to see if there is any way I can get out of the NDA so that I can showcase on my website the work I did for this project.
