Roommate Hasn't Paid Back Rent And Is About To Move Out

Me, stupid person. my roomate been lagging behind on paying his rent. Because his name was not on contract, he payed money to me and i payed to stuy town. On last november he did not pay his rent at all. In this january I proposed to pay his rent for him and that he could pay me back later. I was stupid enough to not ask him to sign any contract and he agreed. So far I paied 6 month of rents for him yet he only payed me back 1.5 month of rents. Now i am in need of money back, ideally by end of may. he claimed that he will try cover it up by july, and that he is not willing to sign a proof of debt without talking to his parents or lawyer first, and that if we were to put the case to court it would not be good for me since there are no any contacts. He will be moving out in a week. I am scared that he will not sign proof of debts, or pay back too late, what should i do?
