Revoking Durable Power Of Attorney

Card image cap

A few days after I turned 18 my Mom had me sign a power of attorney at an attorney’s office. They said it was in my best interest going to college so I didn’t think much of it and signed. Fast forward 20 years and I am getting letters from a life insurance company saying I owe loans. Apparently my Mom used the POA to transfer a childhood policy to me at 18, make herself the beneficiary, increase the benefit amount, and has been taking loans against the policy. I asked her several times to pay it back and cancel the policy since I don’t need this policy I have my own through my employer.

My concern is she keeps stalling and won’t shred the POA documents. She finally texted me a copy and in theory she could do anything on my behalf including sell my home. I know it was dumb to sign my life away at 18 but I had no idea what a durable POA was and I trusted her and the attorney. Do I have any options to cancel it without her consent? The document says if she passes away then my Aunt becomes POA but my Aunt did not sign the document. It’s not personal but I would prefer my Mother who has been deceptive already doesn’t have this level of control over me.
