No Lunch Or Breaks As A Lifeguard. Is There Anything I Can Do?
I work as a lifeguard for the YMCA in New York, and me and my coworkers recently have been trying to figure out if there is anything we can get our certain branch on for not allowing us to take breaks or lunches during our shifts. Me and some of the highschool coworkers I work with have worked 8 to 10 hours before with no lunch or breaks. I’ve been suspicious of this for a while now since I have NEVER worked a lifeguard job without some sort of break or lunch. We have tried talking to HR and our director but we just get the response of “figure it out” even though they have told us due to the Health Department both guards must be on deck at all times. I have had way too many close calls on deck about needing to use the bathroom as well. I just want to know if there is anything I could do or someone I could call to fix this. I love lifeguarding as my job for college, but the long hours are exhausting mentally and I fear that one day I won’t be as vigilant when guarding and miss something.
