My Neighbors Got Shot Last Night Inside Their Vehicle Parked In Our Complex Parking Lot.

I rent an apartment and have lived here for 5 years. Within the last 6 months, my car has been broken into on 3 occasions, one of my neighbors robbed a restaurant at gunpoint and ran home on foot (law enforcement came quickly with their rifles and I advised them of his whereabouts, then was asked to identify him following a standoff). In May, a pitbull jumped through a window screen where it lived and pinned my golden retriever down to the ground aggressively attacking him resulting in serious injuries) — pitbulls are not allowed at our property but my main concern is the dog wasn’t required to be removed and the tenant suffered no consequences. A few weeks ago, gunfire rang out at 3am by someone being an idiot, but they were allowed to continue to live in their unit. Last night, my neighbors got shot while sitting in their car after they refused to let a juvenile rob them. Three victims in total, crime scene tape went up and sirens wailing nonstop.

I have asked property management to fix the burnt out lights around the property because it’s far too dark to see anything in front of you. I submitted an original request in February 2024 and it was not fixed until mid-October. There are security cameras up, but only one of them is flashing indicating it is indeed recording — others aren’t. About 1.5 months ago I notified management of lights being out and their specific location — none have been repaired.

I am thankful to have not been a gunshot victim and I’m sickened by my neighbors being harmed so seriously. I hope they take all appropriate legal actions available to them. With the documented requests and the lack of repair or reasonable turnaround time, is management’s negligence in ensuring their tenants’ safety is maintained something that they can be held liable for in a courtroom setting?
