My Kid Was Assaulted At School

Card image cap

At the end of his school day during normal hours my son(12m) was walking in the school parking lot to get on his afternoon bus to come home. By his estimation he got about 20 ft from his bus when a kid he does not know(he thinks the kid is 17 and a junior in high school), winds up and punches him in the mouth. My son got braces roughly 2 weeks ago and the hit was hard enough that it popped a bracket for the braces off of one of his teeth. My son had half a dozen names of witnesses(other kids) which I gave the principal when I called the school, and he said they will take this very seriously and find out who did this and figure out where to go from there. My son has an appointment to get his braces fixed which I’m hoping there isn’t a cost for. My question is somewhat open ended, but where should I go from here legally? I’m of the mindset kids do stupid stuff but this is way over that line and the agressor in this situation is nearly an adult and punched a 12 year old. He is potentially one year away from being the legal equivalent of me punching a 12 year old. I don’t really want to potentially ruin the kids future and I’m more so looking for a starting/reference point on how to handle this. I’m not sue happy and don’t blame the school at all. Any advice would be welcome, thank you out ahead of time!

Just to add - no history between my son and this kid, or and kind of bullying, my son is decently liked and an athlete, he doesn’t have any idea who this kid is other than the fact that the aggressors girlfriend rides his bus(she is also much older and they’ve never talked either), but the aggressor does not.
