My Gf’s Boss Is Forcing Her To Drive Her Own Car And Is Suddenly Making Her A Contracted Employee To Avoid Paying Car Insurance
For context, this is in North Carolina.
Her boss has a company car. My girlfriend used to drive it, but when the new year rolled around her boss said that she was no longer allowed to drive the company car because she “couldn’t pay for the insurance.” She made my girlfriend into a “contracted employee” and is forcing her to drive her own car for work, which is a large part of her job (she drives for hours each day). She has not adjusted the pay in any way to compensate my girlfriend.
Being that this is in NC, I assume her boss is allowed to do whatever the Hell she wants because I’ve never heard of any labor laws here actually benefitting the worker. But I just want to get some advice on what to do in this situation if anything can be done. I also am not sure how insurance coverage would work in this situation; if my girlfriend got into an accident, would she be fully liable for all damages? If that was the case and her insurance didn’t cover her driving on the job (which I’m almost certain it wouldn’t), what are the consequences of that happening?
