My Dad Burned His Friends House And Aaa Insurance Wants 667k Remit Payment

3 years ago, my dad helped out his friend with some basement electric wiring and he messed up and 40% of the house burned down. My dad did not have contractors license and did not sign anything when he helped out his friend.
Recently we received a letter from AAAA insurance stating that we have to pay them back 667k because it was our fault for starting the fire.
I spoke to the insurance agent and informed him that we cannot afford the payment and he said that he didn’t expect us to pay the full amount but he was wondering if my dad was willing to contribute to any of the payment. He told me that he will speak to his supervisor regarding the amount and will call me back next week.
Unfortunately we are a low income family and we only make 40k a year and can barely afford rent.. are we liable for this even though there was no written contract between the two parties ..
