My Child Got Abused At School
Hi Reddit,
I need advice regarding my child’s asthma medication at school
- Background: My child carries their own asthma inhaler at school with prior doctor authorization. The doctor provided documentation to the school three months ago, confirming that my child can self-administer medication as needed (“PRN”).
- Issue: The school nurse insists on having a detailed schedule and dosage instructions from the doctor, even though asthma attacks are random and “as needed”. The nurse has:
- Contacted the doctor without my knowledge or consent to request detailed medication instructions.
- Claimed that my previous documentation was “not received” or “not official” and demanded new copies, even after I showed email screenshots proving the doctor note had submitted with the date stated three months ago.
- Rejected the doctor note with self carrying and self administer, saying it “does not comply with school regulations.”
- Additional concerns:
- My child has been mocked at school by staff, being told that they “know what an asthma attack looks like and that the child is faking it.”
- The school is now threatening that my child cannot carry their inhaler unless the nurse receives this new schedule/dosage sheet.
- Questions:
- Is the school nurse’s behavior legal, given that they contacted the doctor without parental consent?
- Can my child legally continue to carry and self-administer their inhaler at school while we dispute this?
- What steps can I take to stop the school from overstepping parental rights and ensure my child’s medical needs are respected?
- Location: CA, USA
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
