My Cats Have Leukaemia And Aid's

Card image cap

Hello everyone,

Location: Nicaragua I need legal guidance about traveling with my cats to the United States. Both of my male cats are neutered, 6 years old, weigh around 6 kg, and although they tested positive for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) and FeLV (feline leukemia), they are currently healthy, stable, and have strong immune systems.

The problem is that in Nicaragua the veterinary authorities require a health certificate and rabies vaccination to export pets. Some vets refuse to issue the certificate because of the FIV/FeLV diagnosis, and I’ve also been told the rabies vaccine could be risky for immunocompromised cats.

My questions are:

From a U.S. legal/CDC perspective, are cats with FIV/FeLV allowed to enter the country?

If the rabies vaccine is not medically safe, is there a way to request a medical exemption to enter the U.S.?

Legally speaking, is there any way to challenge or appeal Nicaragua’s refusal to issue the export certificate, or would I need to work with a lawyer/agency to make this possible?

I love my cats dearly and I don’t want to leave them behind. Any advice from people with experience in U.S. import laws for pets, veterinary exemptions, or navigating export regulations from Nicaragua would mean a lot.

Thank you in advance!
