My Brother Passed Away, Financially What Are Our Next Steps

Card image cap

Location: California, Los Angeles County

Found my brother(29) dead on 7/24, from what I saw and from coroners said when they arrived he passed on 7/22 in his sleep. From what we know so far, there was no will and it was not suicide. He was a private person, lived alone. As far as we know he wasn't married and had no kids, so our mom would be next of kin. He didnt have the best relationship with his dad (we had different dads) and they didnt speak much. My mom did reach out just to notify what happened and from what was said between them, his dad wont be involved or try to involve himself in what the next steps are or to be part of next of kin, if that makes sense.

Detectives have his phone. I(25) have his computer and will be making efforts to get into it for any information in his financials and to try get an idea of recurring charges being made to track what would be pulled from his bank account. and to try to change any important payments to mine of my moms accounts.

As far and any of his physical possessions we have that covered and know what to do with most if not all of it. I'll take any advice everyone has about well anything, but I am looking for more specific on his financials. My mom and I would be handling what to do with any money in his checking and savings accounts. I'm not sure if he had any brokerage accounts or if he did if he had anything invested there and what to do about that. He did have an online wealthfront account that I'd like some advice about as well. He did tell me he had taken out some personal loan a while back, I dont know if thats been paid off or what to do about the remaining balance and any balance on his credit cards.

And how to title transfer his car to my name, he was actively working on it so its not right to sell it just yet.

As far as what we can do right now, its all locked behind his computer and phone but i know financially and legally we shouldnt try to move any money ourselves until everything has been settled. So im just looking for what to do.

Thank you
