Misfueled A Rental Camper Van In Iceland (i'm U.s.) - Rental Company Charged Us $10k

We rented a VW camper van in Iceland recently and misfueled it just before returning. The van took diesel and in our haste, we inadvertently topped off half the tank with gasoline before attempting to return it. We drove the van maybe 100-200 yards before it became jerky and topped accelerating. We turned off the van, called the company, they picked us pick and towed the truck to the shop.

Once we got to the rental office we met with the manager. He informed us that this was very bad and an extremely costly repair that we would be responsible for. He provided us a recent invoice from a similar repair totalling over $10,000 euro and said we owe him that amount now and if the shop said the damage wasnt as bad as expected, we'd be reimbursed the difference back. It felt like we had no choice in the moment and put $10k on the credit card we used for the rental also.

We called the credit card (Chase Sapphire) and were told they would not cover this. They recommended we call our personal car insurance company (which I have not yet done) to see if they'll cover.

I'm waiting on the final details on damages and what the final cost for repairs is, but I can't financially afford a $10k bill on what feels like such a small (yet costly, admittedly) mistake.

Does anyone have any advice on if this is something covered with insurance or any legal recommendations?

Any advice is helpful!
