Legal Steps To Take Before Confronting Meth User

Hi, found out last night my dad is on meth and trying to figure out what to do with this information. Location is US. Alabama

Here's the story in chronological order. Dad has been abusive toward mom throughout their 49 years together. Ive been low contact with dad for like 20 years. Probably about 4 years ago he graduated from pill abuse to meth. A year ago my sibling L found his stash but kept it a secret. Dad has developed an online shopping addiction. With dad's cognitive and physical decline we started looking into getting him declared mentally incompetent so that my brother R can protect parents' assets from dad. Dad confessed to L a month ago he's still shooting meth. Mom has been taking dad to doctors to diagnose his mysterious symptoms. A week ago dad assaulted mom and she ended up in the hospital with head trauma. It's the first time he's struck her. Mom is staying with me until she's fully recovered, planning to go home to dad next week. Last night L finally told me and R about the meth. We're getting ready to tell mom in hopes she'll stay with me and essentially leave dad.

My concern is mom's wellbeing.

Is there any legal reason we should postpone confronting dad, and take other steps first? For instance, would it be harder to get him declared mentally incompetent if the reason for his cognitive decline is meth?
